Trump Administration Moves to Cut Federal Contracts with Harvard Over Civil Rights Concerns

The Department of Education is seeking ways for all federal agencies to end their contracts with Harvard University, a senior official mentioned on Tuesday.

The official said the General Services Administration (GSA) is planning to request that agencies carefully review their current contracts with Harvard and, if considered appropriate, reassign them to other companies.

This step, previously mentioned by The New York Times, is a new sign of the growing dispute between the Trump administration and Harvard, one of the nation’s most respected academic institutions.

NBC News received a letter requiring agencies to list any contracts with Harvard that have been cancelled, and GSA says these should be sent by June 6.

In addition, we suggest you begin looking for alternative service providers in place of Harvard when considering future contracts, the letter adds. The agreement was inked by John Gruenbaum, who is the GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service commissioner.

Gruenbaum described the vote as one that stood for civil rights. He said Harvard did not obey a Supreme Court order that banned considering race in admissions, and also did not act when students said they faced harassment as Jews at the university.

Harvard University has not offered any comment so far.
