The richest man in the world and the most powerful may not be ready to reunite soon, but at least one of them has shown his regrets over the state of their relationship, which is now in shambles.
In the wee hours of Wednesday, Elon Musk told X that he regrets some of the insults he shared as he and President Donald Trump engaged in an exchange of insults via social media, saying “they went too far.”

In his 3 a.m. ET message, Musk did not specify which of his posts he regretted last week and he did not provide the reason that may have made him change his mind so suddenly.
During their online spat, which was triggered by groundbreaking spending legislation that Trump has dubbed the big beautiful bill, Musk said the president would not have won the election without him and alleged that he is sabotaging the efforts of DOGE in reducing billions of dollars in federal budgets.
Musk has described the bill as a “filthy abomination” that will put the U.S. into Unsustainable debt.
On Saturday, Trump expressed his disillusionment with his former friend, hinting that the U.S. government might sever its profitable relationships with Musk-related companies, which caused the nemesis Tesla chief to bring up the fact that the president had at one time had connections with Jeffrey Epstein, the now-deceased sex offender.

When one X user responded that Trump should be impeached, Musk responded with a “Yes.”
Trump gave an interview with NBC News on Saturday in which he said that there would be unspecified serious consequences to Musk should he choose to financially support any Democrat candidates who vote against the government-wide budget bill.
The bill has made it through the House, but may well be shot down in the Senate where only four Republicans need to turn their backs on the bill to kill it.
Musk is a former adviser to the Trump administration and a significant Republican donor who has led the Department of Government Efficiency in reducing billions of dollars in federal budgets and heading election campaigns.
The two flattered each other, and the president even offered Musk to join Cabinet meetings. The formal conclusion of the government position of Musk was celebrated by Trump in a ceremony in the Oval Office, wherein the latter presented the Tesla founder a ceremonial golden key.

However, as Trump became focused on getting his budget bill passed and Musk completed his tenure in the White House to get back to his companies, the rapport turned bad.
Musk and his companies have a lot at stake, given that some of them depend on government subsidies. The spat caused Tesla to lose $152 billion in market capitalization, the largest decline in the company’s ever, although its stock price has since partially recovered.
