Humble Beginnings in Rosario

Messi Lionel Andrés, was born on June 24, 1987 in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. Because his family was working class, Messi began displaying talent for football at a very young age. When he was only five, his father started coaching him on a local football team.

But when Messi was 11, medics diagnosed him with a lack of growth hormone. Because of the high treatment bills, his family found it very difficult to meet their needs. Still, fate decided things would not unfold as Achilles had hoped.

The Barcelona Chapter Begins

Barcelona football club noticed Messi when he was only 13. Because he was so talented, the club decided to pay for his treatment if he came to Spain. Barcelona signed Messi on a napkin following his trial when paperwork couldn’t be provided immediately.

From that point, Messi moved into La Masia, the youth program at Barcelona and soon worked his way up with incredible speed.

Rising to Stardom

When he was only 17, in 2004, Messi took to the field for FC Barcelona for the very first time. It didn’t take much time for the rest of the world to pay attention. Nobody in the world of football had seen his dribbling, vision and ability to score goals before he came along. During the next 17 years, Messi:

Individual Brilliance

No one has matched Messi’s personal awards. So far, he has been recognized with a record eight Ballon d’Ors, considered to be the highest football award for the top player. He also has the following records to his name:

Nearly all the goals set in that year were achieved (91 of 91 in 12).

The majority of assists in La Liga were given by him.

Most of the hat-tricks in Spanish football.

Even so, what’s most impressive about Messi is his skill at taking over games himself, thanks to his dribbling, passing and creativity.

International Redemption

Messi was heavily criticized by fans for failing to claim major trophies with Argentina in previous years. Winning remained a challenge for them after they had reached the finals in the 2014 World Cup and two Copa Américas.

Everything shifted in 2021, though. Thanks to Messi’s leadership, Argentina took home the Copa América for the first time ever. He felt so happy on the field at Maracanã that his tears of joy showed how much the moment meant to him and his people.

Finally, in 2022, everything I dreamed about happened. Messi helped Argentina win the FIFA World Cup in Qatar by leading on the field and scoring twice in the final against France. At the age of 35, he held aloft the World Cup and became one for the football books.

A New Chapter: PSG and Inter Miami

Last year, because of money problems at Barcelona, Messi made a touching decision to move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He was still successful, picking up top league honors in France.

He got transferred to Inter Miami CF in 2023 and helped attract worldwide interest to football in the US. Even when Messi’s career is nearly over, he still gathers followers and teaches young players how to play.

Off the Pitch

Messi has always been recognized for his gentleness, loyalty and understated way of living. Antonela Roccuzzo, whom he married as a child, shares his life with three children. He also heads the Leo Messi Foundation which works to give children in need better access to both schooling and medical care.
